There is a lot of hair in India. That was the blinding insight that started our quest to develop a disruptive business in India's men's grooming market. Our idea was to port the efficient, affordable QB House model that is popular in Singapore and other Asian markets to India (QB House is detailed in the section titled "Remember: Quality is Relative" of The Little Black Book of Innovation). We would launch a series of single-chair kiosks that offered high-quality hair cutting, shaving, and related grooming services at affordable prices. We saw a wide open market, what is sometimes called a white space, blue ocean, or greenfield market.

Disruptive Technology and Disrupted Markets
Disruptive Technology as a term has never sat comfortably for me. The best examples of technology for me are those that seamlessly blend in, and not to confuse or to impede progress. Yet when you look at the state of the world economy perhaps we need to go through the pain of seeing old ways being put to the sword and challenged by new ways of raising and distributing capital.
The internet has allowed for new models and models for lending to be devised and shared more rapidly and broadly then ever before. It would be easy to focus on crowdfunding as an example of disruptive technology, but there are also other less prominent examples of markets being turned upside down.

Creating a new category or subcategory using substantial or
transformational innovation is difficult, can be diverting, and involves
the ultimate risk that it may not work in the marketplace. Many firms
explicitly or implicitly avoid innovating new categories or
subcategories because of these risks and because they want to focus on
existing product markets. Their strategy is to allow small firms to
innovate and prove the new category or subcategory has traction. They

do, because those brushes with serendipity can have a huge impact on
your long-term success.
Let me explain what I mean by sharing a quick story:
Some time ago, I was approached by some colleagues in charge of managing of a different part of HSN’s digital business. They felt that there was a lot of opportunity to leverage SEO – one of the channels that I manage – in order to drive incremental revenue and market penetration. I agreed, and decided to pitch in some of my marketing budget in order to bring in a new vendor that could help capture some of that SEO opportunity for this particular portion of the business.
Let me explain what I mean by sharing a quick story:
