5 Pay-Per-Click Mistakes That Can Cost You Money

One of the fastest ways to draw more potential customers to your website is pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Using tools such as Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing and others, business owners can display ads in the sponsored results section of search results pages and pay a fee each time someone clicks through from the ad to their site.

But PPC can be risky if not executed correctly. You can wind up spending a significant amount of money without getting the number of new customers you were hoping for.

If you're new to PPC advertising, don't panic. It is possible to learn how to run a profitable campaign through practice and experimentation. Here are five costly PPC mistakes you'll want to avoid when starting out:

Mobile Provides Promising Revenue Opportunities for Media Sellers

From the Borrell Local Online Advertising Conference 2013

One of the more interesting sessions at the Borrell Local Online Advertising Conference I recently attended was “What SMBs are planning to spend on mobile and when.” Researchers Greg Harmon and Larry Shaw from Borrell shared some data from their latest research on mobile trends. They surveyed nearly 2,000 local SMBs between December 2012 and January 2013 to find out what their marketing plans were for the coming year.

Facebook Sponsored Posts: Do They Work?

Can Facebook's sponsored stories help your marketing efforts? Maybe, but it's complicated.

Facebook is working for advertisers, according to an Advertising Age survey.

Out of 701 marketers and media execs polled, 85 percent said that they use Facebook as a marketing tactic. Just under 30 percent had tried using sponsored stories. Of them, 15 percent were very satisfied with the results, 65 percent somewhat satisfied, 15 percent, somewhat dissatisfied, and 6 percent, very dissatisfied.

Many businesses are trying to understand if, and how, sponsored posts can work for them on Facebook. Instead of focusing on "marketers and media execs," which could mean many agencies, I put a PR query out to thousands of companies and heard from dozens. This isn't a statistical study, but it did result in anecdotal evidence that helps explain how entrepreneurs are using sponsored stories and the results they're getting: good, bad, and indifferent.

Top advertising tips: Moving display marketing forward in 2013

Online video advertising and rich media has boomed in recent years, but what are the key display marketing trends to prepare for this year? Gustav Mellentin, CEO at Adform, looks at why video and social will be big drivers in online display advertising campaigns in 2013.

As we venture into 2013, the display marketing world is in the best shape it has been in for some while. Towards the back end of last year, a report I read on Broadband TV News revealed that global online advertising revenues will reach $143 billion in 2017. What’s more, it revealed that the 2017 total is more than double the $66 billion recorded in 2010 and considerably up from the $92 billion predicted for 2012.

Suggestions for the Online Advertising Industry in 2013

As 2012 comes to a close, many articles are written that outline the "predictions for 2013," "top advertising stories of 2012," "five reasons why the online advertising industry will fail in 2013," and so on and so on. These articles are fun to read and some are even useful and insightful. Instead of pretending that I have some secret insight into the future of the online advertising industry or a knowledge base significant enough to accurately outline what's to come in 2013, I would rather share a couple suggestions. Online advertising is a fast-moving, ever-changing industry and sometimes we are moving a little too fast to stop and reflect on why we think what we think and why we do what we do.

Social Media Advertising: Should Bloggers Bother?

Social media has proven its worth as a networking tool and a means of raising brand awareness, but the future of sites like Facebook and Twitter depend on convincing brands that that it’s worthwhile to invest in advertising on their sites in addition to interacting with customers.

Ads on Facebook usually appear in the right column, though Facebook has been experimenting with more socially-based ads that show up in the streams of users. With its simpler interface, Twitter relies on promoting tweets that show up in the tops of users’ update streams.

The Key To Paid Search Marketing Success: Seeing The Bigger Picture

Analyzing the effects of your PPC Advertising Campaign in parts, section by section and component by component, may be a fashionable way of analyzing your campaign, but it is by no means the most effective. The most effective way of optimizing your PPC Campaign is by seeing where the holes are in the bigger picture.

Thinking about your campaign as a series of events that are linked, each one to the other in a kind of chain format, is a much more effective approach to PPC Advertising. It helps to ensure that all elements are working towards achieving the same goals and this is why progress is made at a quicker rate than when analyzing campaigns by section.

3 Ways PPC Averages Lie

News organizations love to report averages. For example, in 2002 the CDC released data about the average height and weight of American adults. According to their data, the average adult woman is 5'4" and weighs 163 pounds.

Now think about all the adult women you know. Are they all 5'4"? Do they all weigh 163 pounds? Of course they don’t!

Averages are a necessary evil when it comes to reporting numbers. Averages help us spot trends.

The value of social media advertising

Advertisers need to understand social media advertising is not just about placing ads it’s about context and content.

Twitter, passed 10 million active users in the UK this week, Facebook has 30 million users in the UK but will an advert on Facebook be three times as effective as one on Twitter and is it less effective as an advert on Google? We look at how you make the right choice for your business and get the most out of your social media advertising.

Calculating the return on investment on social media is a problem for most businesses; just what is the value of a tweet on Twitter to your business, and what is the real cost to a business for the creation and day-to-day management of a Facebook page? If you’re looking at the web and to other businesses for answers to this sort of question then you won’t find them.

Advertising's 5 Biggest Lies

Among our fellow citizens, it is commonly believed that we ad hacks get paid to lie. While I am not prepared to stipulate, I do concede that sometimes we don't quite tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

So when you set out to write a piece entitled Advertising's 5 Biggest Lies, you are begging for trouble. It's like writing Las Vegas's 5 Worst Buffet Dinners or Pepsi's 5 Dumbest Marketing Ideas. No matter what you pick, someone's got something to top you.

Nonetheless, trouble is my business. So here we go -- advertising's 5 biggest lies:

What Getting Engaged Taught Me About Online Advertising Opportunities

It’s not always the “what,” sometimes it’s the “when.”

We are all familiar with the marketing mantra of “Who, What, When and Where,” but sometimes we get so focused on the “Who” and the “What” that we miss the opportunity in the “Where” and “When.” No, this is not turning into a Dr. Seuss blog post, but as he always says “Think and wonder, wonder and think.” I ask you do to the same as you look for new market opportunities for your business.

After getting engaged last April, I experienced a change in how I am targeted based on lifetime events and new behaviors at this time in my life. This has made me think about the new opportunity service providers and retailers have when things change in a consumer’s life, and how to take advantage of that change.

How to Write a Creative Brief

The creative brief is the foundation of any advertising or marketing campaign. It's the treasure map that creatives follow, and it tells them where to start digging for those golden ideas. Or at least, it should, if it's any good.
A good creative brief is hard to come by. A combination of lack of knowledge, increasingly tighter deadlines, bad habits, laziness, poor account management, bad creative direction, or all of the above, contribute to this document becoming an afterthought in many agencies. But done right, everyone benefits.

So, although it would take a book to explain how to write a great brief, here is a step-by-step guide to getting on the right track.

Brands on Facebook: Advertising Is Optional

Marketers From GNC to P&G Weigh in on Social-Platform Strategy

But do they need to advertise as well? That's the question facing brands -- as well as investors --as Facebook prepares for its anticipated $100 billion IPO on Friday.
The Facebook ideal goes something like this: a brand builds a presence there and cultivates a fan base. That fan base spreads the word about the product. When brands want more impact, or to reach non-fans, they advertise.
But the reality is that much of what brands spend on Facebook isn't going into its coffers. A Facebook presence is must-have for brands. Facebook advertising, on the other hand, is not. General Motors showed that by telling the Wall Street Journal earlier this week that it's pulling the plug on all Facebook advertising -- $10 million of it -- even as it spends another $30 million building and maintaining a Facebook presence for its various car makes and models.
