Lots of people are now calling time on
SEO – they’ve had enough with endless algorithm changes ruining all of
their hard backlink building work. There are few alternatives to SEO in
terms of generating traffic, you can always go with PPC (paid clicks),
although these do tend to be expensive. One of the big three most
popular traffic generation techniques is with social media – and it’s
only going to become more popular as time progresses.
Generating traffic with social media is easy (but time consuming)
Compared to spending hours on end building backlinks in order to dominate search engines, generating traffic through social media websites is actually pretty simple – and fun. Look at Pinterest for example, you pin pictures on your wall and if you’re lucky people will click through to your site – how hard can it be? Take Twitter too, post a few tweets, reply to a few people and in no time at all you can have traffic flowing into your site. Then of course there’s Facebook – setup a dedicated page for your site, create some buzz around it and watch the traffic roll in.
The thing with social media is that it’s quite labor intensive. If you don’t put in the time to interact with users then you won’t see any traffic from it at all. It’s the same as SEO really – because if you don’t put the effort in to build backlinks, you’ll never see any sort of SERP gain. The good thing about social media marketing is that you can outsource it, if you really do feel like you don’t have the time to do it.
Building a following is essential
It’s very important that you build a following, that means getting lots of “followers” on Twitter, lots of “Likes” on Twitter, and lots of +1s on Google. Once you’ve got a strong following you can expect to get a lot of traffic to your website through every status update you make, or every tweet you send that contains a link. If you’re sending messages to your list of followers and it’s only ten strong, it’s pretty obvious that you’re not going to get the torrent of traffic that you were hoping for.
To build a following, and to maintain it, you need to listen to what your followers have to say – reply to their tweets and messages, and just generally show them that you’re interested and that you care about them. Not only will this keep your existing followers happy, it will also encourage others to follow you on social media too.
More and more people are joining social networks, more and more social networks are popping up. If you can’t see that social media is only going to become more and more popular as a source of traffic, you might well be in the wrong business. Stop wasting countless hours on SEO only to have your work thrown back in your face – put your time into some constructive marketing and traffic generation using social media.
