Top 10 Sales Words And Phrases To Avoid

Sales is a tough, no matter how you look at. Some words turn folks off more than others. To improve your chances in an ever-competitive marketplace, here are the top 10 sales words and phrases you might want to avoid.

1. “Trust me” is a sure turn-off when you are trying to convince someone about how great a product or service is. How many times have you heard that phrase and thought, “OMG, get me out of here!”

2. Avoid the word “phenomenal” at all costs. If this word is not overused in the sales vocabulary, I don’t know what is. Plus, how many times do you hear other sales people use it when trying to describe something? What do you do? If you’re smart, which you certainly are, you probably turn and find the nearest exit.
3. “Once in a lifetime” is another sales phrase that is better left alone. Again, how many times have you heard this being used? Very rarely does it apply. Most products, services or thoughts have been done before, but with a new spin. So, spare your customers the mumbo jumbo.
4. Avoid using the phrase “The best ever.” If this is not a subjective phrase, nothing is. What is the best for one person, may not be the best for another.
5. “You should” is another sales phrase that “you should” avoid using. Who are you to tell your customer what they should do? As soon as those words come out of your mouth, your customer will likely be offended and leave.  If you’re hosting an online meeting, don’t be surprised if the customer happens to lose his/her Internet connection.
6. Avoid using the phrase, “I’ll try.” How indecisive is that? Customers want certainty when dealing with salespeople. This phrase is anything but that.
7. “Perhaps” sends out negative images to your potential customers. Who wants to hear that when negotiating a sale? You come across as being wishy-washy with no sense of certainty. Avoid using this word to increase your customer’s trust and confidence in your abilities.
8. Avoid using the word “can’t” in your sales conversation. Using that word tells others that you view things as being straight and narrow, allowing no negotiations. Who likes that? Good sales rely on negotiating until both parties are happy. While you’re at it, take the word “difficult” out of your sales vocabulary. Who wants to hear about something being too hard to use or learn? As soon as that word leaves your mouth, your customer will look for another product, service or person who offers something easier to deal with.
9. Stop using the word “buy” in your sales vocabulary. As soon as customers hear that word, they think about spending money. They will not think about the value your product or service provides in the long term.
10. “To be honest with you” is another sales phrase you need to avoid. Using this gives the impression you are hiding something from your customer. Also avoid using synonyms such as “to be frank” and “to tell you the truth”.
Sales is tough enough when you use words and phrases appropriately. Take your career to the next level by avoiding the above known deal breakers.
