Six SEO Strategies for eCommerce Websites

Anyone who knows anything about search engine optimization understands that content is king.  The goal of search engine optimization is to climb to the top of Google’s ranking system and fresh content is at the top of Google’s list of reasons to boost site rankings.  The problem with employing search engine optimization for an eCommerce site is the lack of content.  At the end of the day, Google rewards unique and original content that provides value to readers.  SEO for eCommerce and related sales sites is possible and can prove extremely valuable.  Here are some great SEO tips for eCommerce sites.

1. Optimize Title Tags

The benefits of optimized title tags with keyword phrases are twofold.  First, the keyword phrases help the search engines understand what the page is really about.  Keywords are without a doubt the single most important element to search engine optimization and failing to include keyword phrases in title tags could cost your website higher rankings and ultimately potential leads, clients and sales.  The best title tags for SEO are between 3 and 8 words with the keyword phrase used no more than twice.  Use the primary keyword first and place your website name at the end of the title.  Finally, try to make your title tags interesting to entice potential visitors to click on your site.

2. Search-Friendly URLs

Search-friendly URLs signal search engines that the page is relevant to the search query.  The best way to create optimized, search-friendly URLs is to include the primary keyword in the URL.  If you are a bakery optimizing for chocolate chip cookies then a search-friendly URL would be www.site .com/chocolate-chip-cookies.

3. Original Content

Duplicate content is the number one killer of search engine optimization.  Google actually penalizes sites that use duplicate content and nothing will drop your rankings faster than copying and pasting manufacturer product descriptions.  In Google’s eyes, unique content represents an authority site.  In the eyes of your visitors, unique and compelling content is often the deciding factor in converting them into customers.  Keep in mind that it is important to use keywords but write for the visitor and not just for the search engines.

4. Product Reviews

Product reviews signal Google that you allow others to leave non-biased reviews on your site- and Google loves this!  Product reviews also encourage Google to crawl your site more often in search for updates to those reviews.  Once again, the benefits of product reviews are twofold as customers are also far more likely to purchase items that have reviews.

5. Alt Tags in Images

Placing alt tags in images is a simple yet commonly overlooked strategy to improve search engine optimization.  Unable to read images, Google and other search engines look at the alt tags of website images to understand what the page is about.  Alt tags in images are not the most important element in search engine optimization but are easy enough to implement for a quick boost in rankings.  Try to include the primary keyword phrase in the image alt tag.

6. Social Media

Social media changed the face of web and SEO as we know it.  Social media alone is generally not enough to boost rankings significantly but it certainly helps to both index sites within Google and promote brand awareness.  The key to success in social media is to encourage customers to share images, links and content.  Remain an active member in the online community to establish your brand as an authority on the web.
