In this article I will share the key steps you need to take to
create your own online product. An online information product is one of
the easiest and cheapest products to make and sell. Typically
information products sold on the internet take one of the following
formats: ebook, audio or video. The choice of which format to use
depends on the nature of the information you are presenting, the needs
and preferences of your market and also your own preferences. The steps
I'm going to share work with all three types.
1. Choose the topic of your product
Even if you already something specific in mind, it is worth doing some quick, basic research to check that the subject matter is of real interest to a significant number of people. One easy way to see if people are interested in and buying products related to your topic is to visit Amazon and see how many books there are. It is also really informative to check out any reviews to see what aspects of the book the readers are really impressed by. Don't neglect to take note of any bad reviews for ideas of how you could make your product better and stand out from the crowd.
2. Brainstorm and organise what you know about your chosen topic
I find it best to sit down with a blank piece of paper and a timer set for 30 minutes and just record any ideas that come. You could use a mind map format. Another useful technique is to write individual ideas on post-it notes which can then be easily grouped and organised. If at the end of the 30 minutes you are still buzzing with more ideas then take a short break and reset the timer for another 30 minutes. Keep a notepad handy over the following days as you will find that additional ideas will pop into your mind. When you feel you've got the bulk of the information that you want to include then you need to start grouping and organising it. I'd suggest that you aim to break it down into chunks that would take 15 to 60 minutes to read, listen to or watch as people's attention spans tend to wander if they are too much longer.
3. Create a product creation schedule and stick to it
This is probably the hardest part. You need to overcome your fears and doubts and just start writing or recording using the notes and structure you've created in step 2. If you find it hard then just schedule short blasts of creating, say 10 - 15 minutes. Just focus on the section you need to do right then and don't worry about everything else you still have to do.
