5 Ways to Get Links Through Content Marketing

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know that content marketing is an absolutely necessary addition to your online marketing strategy in 2013. If your primary goal is to boost your rankings, you’re in luck because content marketing done correctly can lead to many great links back to your website. Here are five types of content you can use to build backlinks for your website.

Lists

Lists are one of the easiest types of content you can create on your blog or website. They tend to get a lot of traction on social media and ultimately attention from other bloggers and website owners in your niche or industry who are happy to share your list with their audience on their blogs.

Best of all, just about anyone in any niche or industry can create lists that will get attention. For example, you can use the following example titles and just plug in relevant people and keywords.

• Top 100 _______ to Follow on Twitter
• Top 100 Facebook Pages in the _______ Industry
• Top 100 Blogs on _______
• Top 100 Tools to Help You With _______
• Top 100 Resources for _______

Of course, your list doesn’t have to be 100, but the more you include in a list, the more attraction it is going to get.

So what tools can you use to help you compile the above-mentioned lists? Try these.

• Followerwonk to find Twitter users by keyword.
• Facebook search or Graph Search to find pages by keyword.
• Alltop and Technorati to find blogs on specific topics.
• Google for tools and resources.

Infographics

Infographics are one of the most popular types of content when it comes to link bait. When they are informative and well designed, they attract social shares along with bloggers and website owners who are excited to embed them on their sites.

If you are not a designer, you don’t have to worry. There are online tools you can use to create infographics without any design skills necessary. They are as follows.

Piktochart.com
• Easel.ly
• Infogr.am
• Venngage

If you would rather have your infographic custom designed, you can go with the following infographic designers.

Cheap Infographic
Now Sourcing
Column Five Media
Infographic World

The key to infographics is the embed code. When you post your infographic on your website, be sure to include custom embed code that anyone can use to add your infographic to your website. And make sure that embed code has a link back to your website. Then go in and occasionally change the anchor text to the link so that you don’t build your links all to one keyword phrase.

Videos

Videos are another way to get links with content, although it’s a bit trickier. Trickier in the sense that most people expect to find videos on YouTube and simply embed them on their website.

So how do you make sure your video content gets links while getting exposure on networks like YouTube? You have to create a video page on your website that contains all of your videos. Or better yet, create multiple pages with a specific theme. An SEO company could have pages for Link Building Tutorials, On-Site Optimization Tutorials, and so forth.

Free Resources

Once you have built up enough content, you will likely have content that could easily be turned into eBooks, whitepapers, and other downloadable content. If you start a page where people can download free resources in these types of formats, you’ll not only increase your mailing list subscribers, but you’ll attract links from people looking to share free resources.

A great example of this is HubSpot’s Marketing Resources page. It is full of free eBooks, reports, webinar playbacks, etc. and it has so far garnered 6,000+ backlinks! And that’s only to the main resource page itself – each piece of free content probably has a good share of backlinks as well.

Tools

Last, but not least, are free tools. These can take a major time and talent investment to create depending on your industry and the types of tools that would attract bloggers and website owners. But the investment can be well worth it.

A great example is the BankRate Mortgage Calculator. This simple form has attracted 32,000+ links from 1,800+ domains! And just like many other forms of content, you don’t have to wait for people to find it. Use it in your link requests to ensure a higher response and success rate when link building.
