How Much Information Is Too Much?

Be Safe Online
What should you share with the public and what should you keep off your personal Web site to be safe online? If you want to stay safe online maybe you should have some things on password protected pages so that only people you want to see it can see it.
Is there a reason you put your full name, address and maybe even your phone number on your personal Web site? Why do you post pictures of your children? Do you talk about personal, very personal things, that happen in your life and leave it out there for all to read? These are not things that help you be safe online.

Personal Information

Lots of people post pictures of their kids, have for years and if you have a family Web site then you probably have pictures of your kids posted on it along with intimate and embarrassing stories to go along with them. You probably have details about your children on your site too, what they like, what they don't like. You may have even mentioned their name, where you live and what school your child goes too. Will they still be safe online?

I'm not saying this is wrong but it is something you may want to think about a little further if you want to be safe online. You should especially consider the part about putting their name, school and place of residence on your Web site if you want them to be safe online. If a predator is out there looking for a child near them and they find your site, by putting their town into a search engine, or by chance, your child could be in danger and will no longer be safe online or at home. Many children think they know someone if the person knows their name and are more likely to go to this person if they show up at her school or bus stop and call her by name.
I don't want to scare you into not posting a family Web site. On the contrary, I want you to be able to post pictures of your kids, but still be safe online. Your friends and family deserve to be able to see your children and pictures of them, they want to read funny stories and know what's going on in your life, you can do all this and still be safe online. This can be done without posting your full name, address, phone number or other identifying things like your location, work or schools and still be safe online.

Intimate Writings

Some people like to post the most intimate details of their life on their personal Web sites. Maybe you do this and you want everyone to read the things you write. That's all well and good and you can do that if you want to, it is your personal Web site after all, just do it in such a way that you will still be safe online.

If you want to post the private, intimate, personal details of your life online but you don't want people to read it unless they are people you want to read it, use a password on your page to be safe online. This can be done with a simple JavaScript. JavaScripts.com offers scripts you can use to password protect your pages to help you be safe online. If you don't want to deal with scripts you can try Bravenet instead. They have a tool called Password Gate that can help you restrict certain pages to keep those pages safe online.
What kinds of things might you want to have password protected to be safe online? If you want to be safe online I would think you would want to hide pages that have your address or phone number, have information you don't want your children to see like a Christmas list, anything about a relative you dislike but don't want them to know about it, talk about your sex life or anything else you want to keep private from someone. You also want to be safe online from ridicule from family.
It works because you can choose a password that will keep you safe online. Then you only give out the password to people you want to see the page. You can give it to your whole family so that the public can't see it but your family can, this can help you be safe online. Maybe you only want to give it to people who ask because you only want people who are serious about your Web site to see it. Maybe it's just for you and no one else at all because you want all your information to be safe online. You can keep your private diary online using a password so no one can see it but you so you will be safe online.

Code To Help You Stay Incognito and Be Safe Online

If you not only want to keep your pages safe online and protected from the public but also from the search engines, then it wouldn't hurt to add a little code to the top of your page. Somewhere inside the tags you should add this code:

Don't use "meta keywords" or "meta description" or any other meta tags that might help a search engine find you. If you really don't want these pages to be found so they will be safe online then you shouldn't use any site promotion techniques that you would otherwise normally use on your other pages. This way the search engines and other's can't find you and you will be safe online.
